Usually, devices networked via Ethernet rely on a separate power supply. However, if these end devices can operate at a low power consumption, then "Power-over-Ethernet" (PoE) is an alternative and data transmission and power supply can be realized via a single network cable. The reference design of a GB Ethernet USB adapter with integrated PoE function from Würth Elektronik now shows how a reliable PoE design can be realized.

The " GB PoE+ Ethernet USB adapter" is based on the reference design of a 1 Gbit/s Ethernet USB adapter without PoE function, which was described in detail in RD016. The " GB PoE+ Ethernet USB Adapter" offers three interfaces, a USB Type-C (USB 3.1), an RJ45 1 Gbit/s Ethernet interface with integrated PoE function, and a connector for a DC/DC converter with an adjustable output voltage of 6 to 18 V and a maximum output power of 25 W. The board is designed to get users acquainted with PoE technology.
