Sustainability is no longer a trend - it is a necessity. In the electronics industry in particular, companies are looking for innovative solutions to conserve resources and reduce their carbon footprint. One promising approach: recyclable printed circuit boards. Together with Jiva Materials Ltd., we at Würth Elektronik Circuit Board Technology are testing a technology that has the potential to change the industry in the long term.

What is special about Soluboard®?

With Soluboard®, Jiva Materials has developed a groundbreaking alternative to conventional FR4 substrates. Instead of glass fiber and epoxy resin, the circuit boards are made of jute fibers and a biopolymer. This has several advantages:

  • Up to 67% lower CO₂ footprint compared to FR4
  • Easy to recycle - the PCB dissolves in hot water so that natural fibers, metals and components can be recovered
  • Reduced use of fossil raw materials as no glass fiber and epoxy resin are used
Our commitment to sustainable electronics

Our technology and research team has been working intensively on Soluboard®. The aim: to find out how this innovative technology can be integrated into our production processes.

Of course there are still unanswered questions:

  • Will Soluboard® stand up to industrial requirements?
  • How scalable is production?
  • What are the costs compared to FR4?

But one thing is clear: the development of sustainable printed circuit boards is a step in the right direction. Companies that focus on such innovations at an early stage can not only reduce their ecological footprint, but also secure competitive advantages.

Frequently asked questions (Q&A)

How is Soluboard® recycled?
The non-toxic polymer dissolves when immersed in hot water. What remains is compostable organic material, metals and electronic components that can be reused.

How much CO₂ and plastic can be saved?
Up to 10.5 kg of carbon and 620 g of plastic per m² can be saved. Further information can be found in Infineon's article: Infineon market news.

Is Soluboard® compatible with industry standard PCB manufacturing processes?
Yes, Soluboard® is fully compatible with processes such as water-based etching, electroplating, drilling, milling and curing.

How can Soluboard® be assembled?
Due to the natural fiber and water-soluble polymer composition of Soluboard® laminates, it is necessary to use a low-temperature soldering process. Soluboard® can be assembled by SMD placement, wave soldering/selective soldering or manually.

Are multilayer PCBs possible with Soluboard®?
At the moment, double-sided PCBs can be realized with PTH (Plated Through Hole).

However, one thing is certain: the development of sustainable PCBs is a step in the right direction. Companies that focus on environmentally friendly innovations at an early stage can not only reduce their ecological footprint, but also secure decisive competitive advantages.
