Low-pass filters for common and differential mode suppression
Common Mode Filter
At common mode noise the inductance of the Common Mode Choke (CMC) is very high. This inductance and the Y-Capacitors (CY1, CY2) build a low-pass for high frequency common mode noise. The Y-Capacitors create a conductor for high frequency noise to internal ground, so common mode noise can be diverted. Because of the high common mode impedance of the Common Mode Choke at high frequencies, the interference current will be attenuated.
Differential Mode Filter
At differential signal noise current flows in through line L and returns through line N. Basically, in this situation the X-Capacitor (Cx) and the Leakage Inductance (LLeak) of the Common Mode Choke build a low pass filter. The loop of this low pass filter is closed via the X-Capacitor. The high frequency interference is filtered. Meanwhile the supply current, which has typically a much lower frequency (50-60 Hz), will pass the filter.
Insertion Loss Examples
Example 1 measured with:
CMC: WE-CMB S / 744 822 110 /
L = 10 mH / IR = 1 A
Cx: 890 324 023 025 /
C = 0.15 µF / UR = 275 VAC
Cy: 885 352 213 015 1/
C = 2200 pF / UR = 250 VAC
Example 2 measured with:
CMC: WE-CMB L / 744 824 220 /
L = 20 mH / IR = 2 A
Cx: 890 324 023 025 /
C = 0.15 µF / UR = 275 VAC
Cy: 885 352 213 015 1/
C = 2200 pF / UR = 250 VAC
Example 3 measured with:
CMC: WE-LF / 744 662 200 2 /
L = 2.2 mH / IR = 2 A
Cx: 890 324 023 025 /
C = 0.15 µF / UR = 275 VAC
Cy: 885 352 213 015 1/
C = 2200 pF / UR = 250 VAC
Example 4 measured with:
CMC: WE-CMBNC M / 744 803 050 9 /
L = 9 mH / IR = 5 A
Cx: 890 324 023 025 /
C = 0.15 µF / UR = 275 VAC
Cy: 885 352 213 015 1/
C = 2200 pF / UR = 250 VAC
