Power Line Communication (PLC)

Power Line Communication (PLC) is a technology that enables the transmission of data and information over electrical power lines.

The existing power grid can be used for communication between the various consumers in applications such as the smart grid, smart metering and industrial and home control systems.

For electric vehicle charging, PLC is part of the general trend to make charging more efficient and convenient, and to adapt it to the needs of users and the grid. PLC is used to transmit data and control signals that allow intelligent charging, monitoring and management of the charging process. The WE-PLC transformer is suitable for AC and DC charging stations according to ISO 15118-3.

Why is a transformer needed for PLC?

Galvanic isolation is required between the supply network and the PLC modem to protect the low-voltage range in the event of a short circuit. In addition, impedance matching must take place to minimize signal reflection. This can be achieved using a transformer.

With the WE-PLC transformer, the PLC system is safely protected and a high signal quality is achieved at the same time.

Turns Ratio

Depending on the application, transformers with different turns ratios are required. A turns ratio of 1:1:1 is used for the PLC interface in e-mobility applications on the charging station side (EVSE). For AC grid communication interfaces, such as in smart grid, IoT or smart home applications, a transformer with a turns ratio of 1:4:3, for example, couples the modem signal to the grid.

From mobile charging cables (ICCPD) to wallboxes for the home and public charging stations (HPC) - Würth Elektronik develops and manufactures electronic and electromechanical components for a wide range of these applications.
