Characteristics

The term "embedded system" refers to systems for monitoring, control or regulation technology. They can also be used for data and signal processing or for the visualisation of all these tasks. In many cases, the embedded system is a specialised computer with all relevant fieldbuses. The systems are often highly integrated and specialised. Components with long-term availability are used and great importance is attached to cost optimisation. The high flexibility of such systems is often also demonstrated by their modular design (base board with basic functionality and computer modules for scalable performance).

Miniaturisation of components enables very compact and powerful embedded systems.
