Intelligent Network Interface Controller for Most

Description

The OS81110 is a highly-integrated Intelligent Network Interface Controller (INIC) specifically designed for the 150 Mbps MOST® network (MOST150) with an optical or coax physical layer. The OS81110 interfaces directly to a MOST150 FOT header. This enables high-bandwidth data transmission by means of LED and polymer optical fiber (POF). As a result, the optical wire harness and connectors of MOST25 can be used. As an alternative a coax physical layer can be utilized by connecting to a MOST150 coax transceiver and coax connector (instead of the FOT header).

Like all INIC circuits, the OS81110 implements time-critical, resource-intensive and fail-safe relevant parts of the network driver on-chip.

OS81110 supports legacy control, synchronous, and packet channel data formats from MOST25 and MOST50. Unlike networks that originate in the IT world, MOST has been specifically designed to utilize bandwidth efficiently and deliver high-QoS audio and video streaming, even in a demanding automotive environment.

In addition to supporting legacy MOST data formats, the OS81110 features two new types of data transport: The new MOST Ethernet channel allows the transport of legacy Ethernet packets and supports MAC addressing. MOST150 is an automotive grade physical layer for Ethernet and IP communications. The new isochronous channels and clocking capabilities of the OS81110 close the gap between synchronous and packet transport. While they are managed like synchronous streams, they make it possible to transport streams that are not synchronized to MOST. These streams range from PCM audio streams, which by nature are synchronous but might not have been synchronized to MOST, to MPEG streams, to streams of packet data.

The INIC makes a MOST device accessible according to the rules of the MOST Specification, even without participation from the External Host Controller (EHC). The INIC provides a message-based interface for control and packet data. Configuration is encapsulated within a Function Block (FBlock INIC) which allows the EHC to manage INIC in the same way as other functions in the system.
